St Philomena’s Catholic High School for Girls
Uniform Guidance
For new Year 7 students joining the school from September 2026
This uniform guidance applies to all students in Years 7–11. Separate uniform guidance applies to students in the Sixth Form. If any student or parent requires clarification about applicability, please contact the appropriate Head of School. Please note the uniform expectations are in place throughout the duration of the school day, including when on school trips and when travelling to and from school.
Main Uniform
The school has three branded items; a blazer, a jumper and kilt/trousers all of which can be purchased from Cladish.
Blazer must be worn at all times.
Kilt must be worn below the knee. Trouser option available as an alternative to the kilt.
V-necked jumper must be worn in addition to the blazer in the late autumn and spring term. In summer the jumper is not compulsory. Sleeves must not be frayed or ripped – please mend or replace.
Blouse should be blue with an open neck. The blouse must be tucked into the kilt/trousers, and not regarded as an over-blouse. A white/cream t-shirt only can be worn under the blouse in colder weather.
Footwear
Shoes should support the whole foot: Shoes which do not firmly grip the upper part of the foot are not suitable. The heels should be flat, not higher than 3cms. The colour is plain black or brown. Bows etc. are not allowed and toes should not be too pointed. Sling back shoes, ankle strap shoes, fabric or plastic beach-type shoes and black trainers are not suitable. Boots or ankle boots are at times worn in colder weather to and from school but are never worn inside the building.
Plain white knee length socks or tights (beige or brown) should be worn from September to Easter. Short plain white ankle socks may be worn in the summer term, but not trainer or sports socks. Socks may not be worn over tights. No other coloured socks or tights may be worn. Please note sports socks are not appropriate as part of the main uniform.
School bag/case
The backpack must be plain black and able to accommodate A4-sized folders/books. Initials of Christian name, middle name and surname should be embroidered in bold gold letters 2.5 cm high across the front of the bag. For safeguarding reasons, only the initials are required on kit bags and school bags. Please see the embroidery section below for more information.
PE Kit
PE kit is to be worn for PE lessons and fixtures only. It may not be worn when travelling to and from school for safeguarding reasons.
Plain navy skort/shorts and shirt. Shirts can be either a round neck t-shirt or polo style shirt. Surname should be embroidered in gold across the front of these garments, so that the name is visible when the uniform is worn.
(Optional) Navy blue sweatshirt and joggers. Please note PE lessons will take place outdoors during winter months. Embroidered with initials only.
PE Footwear
Trainers should be non-marking sports trainers (rubber soles) which will prevent marking or damaging of indoor surfaces.
Sports socks should be non-branded plain navy football socks. They should be worn for outdoor games lessons only (not as part of the main uniform).
A spare pair of plain white ankle socks (not sports socks) should also be available in your daughter’s kit bag.
PE kit bag
The PE bag can be a plain navy holdall and/or a brown drawstring bag embroidered with initials. For safeguarding reasons, only the initials are required on kit bags and school bags. Plastic bags must not be used.
Swimwear
One piece plain swimming suit and swimming hat (any colour). Goggles (optional).
Outdoor Wear
Coats need to be plain black, dark brown or navy (no fur trim or logo). Coats can be worn in cold or wet weather and should be worn over the school blazer. Students must not travel to school in cold or wet weather wearing only their blazer. Coats may be worn at break or lunch time in cold weather but must then be stored in lockers during lessons.
Scarf, hat and gloves must be plain black, dark brown, navy or cream only.
Other
Apron - Students require an apron with their surname only embroidered on it. The apron can be any colour and should not have a pocket.
Valuables bag (optional) – to be used when handing in valuables for safekeeping.
Embroidery
The school recommends embroidery to assist with identifying and preventing loss of items. Embroidery can be organised independently or via Cladish, our uniform suppliers, for all items, regardless of where they are purchased.
In addition, to the embroidery outlined above, parents/carers are encouraged to label all items
Hair and appearance
Hair including two tone braids must be of a natural colour. Extreme hairstyles are not permitted. Hair should not obscure vision.
Hair accessories including beads must be plain and match permitted colours (black, brown, navy, cream or white).
Make-up, fake tan, false nails, false eyelashes, coloured nail polish and tattoos are not permitted for Years 7–11.
Headphones are not allowed in school, unless approved by the SENDCo.
Jewellery and piercings
Only a wristwatch (non-smart watch) is permitted. No jewellery, visible body piercings or earrings are allowed in Years 7–11.
If applicable a medical exemption, for example a medical bracelet may be agreed if the parent request and rationale is made in writing to the Head of School.
Pastoral approach
The school will address uniform issues using a proportionate and supportive approach. Where a student does not meet uniform requirements, staff will seek to resolve this through discussion with the student and parents/carers and offer reasonable solutions to remove the barriers.
Sending a student home will be a last resort and will only be used after other approaches have been tried and recorded, except where there is a clear safeguarding or health and safety risk.
All uniform incidents will be recorded, and repeated breaches will be managed in line with the school’s Relationships and Behaviour Policy.
If parents/carers require support to obtain uniform items, they should contact the relevant Head of School explaining their situation.
Parents/carers may raise concerns with supplier issues with the appropriate Head of School. The Headteacher meets with the supplier at least annually and will feedback all concerns, so a reasonable solution can be found.
